Gwithian Farm Campsite, Cornwall

Perfect Pitch

More than 20 years of memories, miles of golden sand and one of the warmest welcomes in Cornwall make Gwithian Farm much more than just another campsite to us. With spacious pitches tucked between swaying pampas grass, Gwithian Towans just a short walk away and a wonderfully relaxed Cornish atmosphere, this is the one place no Pitch & Giggles camping season feels complete without.

Why We Chose It

The truth is, we don’t really choose Gwithian anymore.

We just go home.

Pitch & Giggles — along with various incarnations of our extended camping family — has been visiting Gwithian Farm for more than 20 years, making at least one trip here virtually every year.

We first discovered it when Mike and Clare had only recently taken over the site. Back then, most of us were tent campers, with my parents representing pretty much the entire campervan contingent of our group.

We called ourselves The Extreme Campers — a name which possibly suggested a level of outdoor survival skill that wasn’t entirely reflected by the amount of stuff we brought with us.

Over the years we’ve introduced countless friends to Gwithian. Tents gradually became campervans, camping equipment became increasingly sophisticated — and considerably more ridiculous — and the Extreme Campers eventually evolved into our current camping crew, The Naughty Corner.

These days, they make the annual pilgrimage down from the Midlands to join us here every September.

We’ve watched the campsite grow. We’ve watched Mike and Clare’s children grow. We’ve watched the pampas grass grow and we’ve even watched the site’s two resident goats grow from kids into adults.

After more than two decades, Gwithian isn’t somewhere we need an excuse to visit.

It’s simply part of our camping year.

First Impressions

Pulling through the gates of Gwithian Farm doesn’t really give us a first impression anymore.

It gives us a familiar one.

We’re back.

The campsite sits in the quiet village of Gwithian, away from the bustle of Cornwall’s bigger tourist destinations, yet just a short walk from the spectacular Gwithian Towans.

And what a beach.

Miles of golden-white sand stretch around St Ives Bay towards Godrevy and its famous lighthouse. Huge dunes roll down towards the sea, surfers dot the water and the whole place has the slightly wild, untamed beauty that makes this part of Cornwall so special.

When the sun comes out properly and the sea turns blue, you could quite easily convince yourself you’ve travelled somewhere considerably more exotic than the North Cornish coast.

Then the wind picks up and reminds you where you are.

For surfers, walkers, beach lovers and owners of dogs who consider several miles of sand an entirely reasonable morning outing, the location is hard to beat.

The Pitch

One of the things we’ve always loved about Gwithian Farm is its sense of space.

Mike has resisted the temptation to squeeze as many pitches as humanly possible onto the land. Instead, there’s room to breathe, with open areas through the campsite providing space for games, children to play and groups like ours to camp together without feeling as though we’re sitting in our neighbour’s awning.

Many of the pitches are divided by established pampas grass, providing natural screening, privacy and some welcome protection from that notorious North Cornish wind.

But the pampas does something else too.

It gives Gwithian its own soundtrack.

When the wind picks up, the tall grasses sway and rustle around the pitches. Sit outside with a drink and they’re whispering away in the background. Lie in bed in the van at night and you can hear them moving outside.

After more than 20 years of coming here, it’s one of those little things we instantly associate with Gwithian.

That gentle whoosh… rustle… whoosh means only one thing.

We’re home.

The Facilities

The facilities at Gwithian have evolved enormously during the years we’ve been visiting, but thankfully the campsite has never lost its relaxed, traditional feel.

There are showers and toilets alongside family bathrooms, freezer facilities, a book swap and a small but well-stocked campsite shop.

During the busier part of the season, visiting food vendors add another very good excuse not to cook, while fresh croissants and coffee on site make lazy mornings even easier.

Coffee.
Croissant.
Check the weather.
Look at the surf.
Eventually decide what you’re doing.
Maybe.

There’s a wonderfully Cornish dreckly attitude to Gwithian. That’s not to say the campsite is without order — far from it. It’s well cared for and there are rules where rules are needed.
But it never feels regimented.
You’re here to switch off, slow down and enjoy being where you are.

Pitch Perks

Our Stay

Trying to describe a single stay at Gwithian is almost impossible because there have been so many.

This place contains more than two decades of our camping memories.

Parents. Friends. Dogs. Tents. Campervans. September gatherings. Beach days. Pub nights. Sunshine. Rain. Wind. Surf.
And sand.
So. Much. Bloody. Sand.
Some things, however, have become part of the Gwithian ritual.
Vinny gets parked up and, frankly, doesn’t need to move very often.

Directly opposite the campsite is the Red River Inn, an extremely convenient arrangement when cooking dinner suddenly seems like far too much effort.

Good food, a Cornish ale and approximately 30 seconds of commuting home.

Perfect.

About a mile away you’ll find The Rockpool, while heading into the dunes reveals little treasures such as the Jam Pot Café, perfectly positioned for a cream tea or some much-needed walking refreshments.

The South West Coast Path opens up even more of this spectacular coastline, with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and opportunities to spot seals along the way.

The campsite itself is also great at keeping visitors informed about what’s happening locally, whether that’s surf conditions and forecasts, wildlife activity or other useful local information.

And then, of course, there are the animals.

Gwithian has two resident goats which we’ve watched grow from tiny kids into adults. Every now and again they’re allowed to roam around the campsite, much to the delight of the children — while simultaneously helping keep the grass under control.
Why use a mower when you have goats?

But even they are slightly upstaged by Mike’s runner ducks.
The ducks quite literally follow him around the campsite.
Mike sets off.
The ducks set off.
Mike changes direction.
The ducks change direction.
And off they all go again, with Mike leading his feathered procession around Gwithian like some sort of Cornish Pied Piper.

We’ve seen it countless times.
It still makes us smile.

Would We Stay Again?

This might be the easiest question we’ve ever answered.

Yes. Again and again and again.
There are campsites we’ve enjoyed.
There are campsites we’d recommend.
There are campsites we’d happily return to.

And then there’s Gwithian.

More than 20 years of our lives are wrapped up in this place.
We’ve arrived as the Extreme Campers and returned as the Naughty Corner
We’ve watched children grow up.
We’ve watched our dogs grow older.
We’ve watched two little goats become considerably bigger goats.
We’ve watched the pampas grow tall enough to create that familiar rustling soundtrack that instantly tells us where we are.

And through all of it, Mike and Clare have continued to provide the same thing that brought us back in the first place:
a warm welcome and a wonderful place to camp.

No camping season feels quite complete until we’ve made that journey south and pulled through the gates of Gwithian Farm again.

The awning goes up.
The dogs know exactly where they are.
Someone inevitably suggests the pub.
Mike wanders past with a procession of runner ducks.
The pampas starts rustling in the Cornish wind.

And we’re home.

Some places you visit.
Some places you come home to.

Pitch Rating

Twenty-plus years of repeat visits probably say considerably more than any star rating ever could.
