Tanpits Cider Farm

After finishing work in Taunton on Friday afternoon, we wanted somewhere close enough to escape without spending half the evening on the motorway. Tanpits was only a short drive away, yet promised something completely different: an orchard setting, a relaxed atmosphere and the chance to swap emails for campfires. Add in a dog-friendly welcome and an easy canal walk into town, and it felt like the perfect place to start the weekend.

As we pulled into Tanpits, it quickly became clear that this wasn’t just another campsite. The apple orchards gave the site a real sense of character, with quirky touches dotted around that made it feel cared for rather than clinical. The welcome was genuinely friendly and, despite the nearby road making its presence known at times, it still felt like a little oasis. Before we’d even finished setting up Vinny, we had a feeling this was going to be a good weekend.

Our pitch gave us plenty of room for Vinny, with enough space to spread out and enjoy the outdoors without feeling overlooked. Rather than neat, uniform rows, the pitches were nestled amongst mature apple trees, giving each one its own unique character. The site was clearly well organised, but the natural orchard layout stopped it feeling regimented and provided welcome pockets of shade during the warmer parts of the day. It struck a lovely balance between thoughtful planning and the relaxed charm you’d hope to find on a traditional Somerset cider farm.

The free-range peacocks roaming the orchards only added to that character. They were fascinating to watch and gave the campsite a personality all of its own, although they could be surprisingly vocal at dawn and dusk. We found it all part of the experience, but light sleepers might want to pack a pair of earplugs.

The facilities at Tanpits were simple rather than luxurious, but they were clean, functional and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. A larger shower and toilet block served the first field, while our pitch in the second field benefited from two toilets conveniently located just a few yards away by the barn.

Fresh water, waste disposal and washing-up facilities were all easy to access, making day-to-day camping straightforward. While the facilities won’t wow anyone looking for luxury, they were well maintained and perfectly suited the relaxed feel of the campsite.

Yes – absolutely.

Tanpits isn’t about luxury facilities or perfectly regimented pitches, and that’s actually a big part of its charm. What won us over was the character: apple trees dotted between the pitches, wandering peacocks, a genuinely warm welcome and a setting that felt individual rather than manufactured.

The nearby road means it isn’t completely tranquil, but for us the location more than made up for it. Being able to leave Vinny parked up and follow the canal into Taunton – with a pub just a few minutes’ walk away and farm cider waiting back at the site – made it an incredibly easy place to spend a weekend.

We’d happily pitch up at Tanpits again.
